This presentation, delivered by Michael Reid, leader, innovative technology from the Horticulture Innovation Lab, is about revisiting the ‘Global Horticulture Assessment.’ It raises questions around the constraints to success in horticulture for smallholder farmers, recommendations, characteristics, and example projects. It then brings up the Horticulture Innovation Lab proposal, objectives, over 35 research projects, and achievements after three years. It includes the Global Horticulture Knowledge Bank, and the regional centers of innovation that will become regional foci for Horticulture Innovation Lab activities in the areas of training, research, outreach, and information.
Despite accomplishments, the presentation asks: Have we fulfilled the hopes and addressed the constraints in the Global Horticultural Assessment? The Horticulture Innovation Lab has worked closely with AVRDC World Vegetable Center and its CGIAR partners in the newly developed Global Horticulture Initiative. We have become a center for knowledge generation, capacity building, and integration. We have partnered with individual, regional, and global consortia of Missions and private and public partners to design and implement projects addressing the core challenges. Successful example projects include the development of phytosanitary and postharvest protocols for the small producer and establishment of a Global Horticulture Knowledge Bank and Extension System.
However, are the constraints identified in the Global Horticulture Assessment still the primary constraints? Depending on the answer, what does this mean for our future work? There are many endless, challenging, and exciting possibilities!
