Professor Jane Ambuko Lukachi serves as a leader in postharvest science and technology at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, where she focuses on reducing food loss and waste through innovative solutions for small-scale producers. She earned her PhD in Agricultural Sciences with a postharvest focus from Tsukuba University, Japan in 2008, following her Master of Science in Horticulture and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi.
As head of the University of Nairobi Postharvest Research Team, Ambuko develops practical solutions for food loss reduction, including the adaptation of low-cost cold storage technologies for small-scale producers. Her "lab-to-land" approach emphasizes direct engagement with farming communities, translating scientific research into practical applications. Throughout her career, she has mentored over 30 students in their MSc and PhD research while building partnerships with international organizations including the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Horticulture. Her collaborative work with industry partners, research institutions, and farmer groups demonstrates her commitment to strengthening food systems through locally-led innovation.
