Description

This thesis which was written by Lizette Carolina Avecillas Ureña analyzes the cooling efficiency of two evaporative coolers. The thesis is primarily in Spanish and was presented at the Panamerican Agricultural School, Zamorano.

Comparative analysis of two zero-energy cooling chambers for small-scale horticultural farmers

Abstract:

Evaporative cooling technologies help small farmers in rural areas to preserve fruit and vegetables without electricity. We evaluated two evaporative coolers known as COLD STORE (Charcoal Evaporative Cooler) and ZECC (Zero Energy Cool Chamber), with a control treatment (shaded environment). The criteria for this evaluation included cooling efficiency and efficiency in the maintenance of quality of green pepper (Capsicum annumm L.). The variables evaluated were: weight, visual quality, ripening, temperature and, relative humidity. Data were analyzed with a One-way ANOVA test and the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis H test (P≤0.05). In the ZECC chamber, pepper, weight was reduced by 1.8%, which compared favorably to COLD STORE (3.13%) and the control (9.99%). The COLD STORE and ZECC chambers preserved the peppers with excellent quality (72% and 76%) compared to the control (0.43%). The cold store was 27% more efficient in reducing temperature compared to ZECC. The two technologies are efficient in terms of increasing relative humidity; however the ZECC chamber reached 110% efficiency which resulted in higher incidence of pests and diseases. Overall COLD STORE and ZECC chambers maintain the quality of the fruit in the best condition for marketing. Small farmers believe that these technologies are accessible and could be implemented not only with the purpose of storing postharvest products, but also for storing other products in their homes. The development and transfer of technologies with low emissions are excellent adaptation and mitigation measures to climate change in vulnerable areas in the Honduran dry corridor.
